Cocha Machuwasi, located in Villa Salvación, Manu (Madre de Dios), is a unique ecosystem formed by a stream that, over time and through human intervention, was transformed into a lagoon. Its name, which in Quechua means “Old House Lagoon,” comes from an ancient nearby structure. Richin biodiversity and surrounded by a living forest, it is a refuge for birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and plants that form a delicate natural balance. Since its official recognition in 2005, Machuwasi has become an ecotourism attraction, where visitors hike trails and sail on traditional “topa” rafts. However, pressure from extractive activities threatens its balance. This field guide wascreated to educate, inspire, and encourage the conservation of this ecosystem, providing accessible information about its most representative species. It is aimed at local guides, tourists, students, and the community, with the goal of promoting responsible tourism and generating sustainable income that benefits the population without harming nature. Understanding Machuwasi’s biodiversity is the first step toward appreciating and protecting it. The more we know and admire this place, the more committed we will be to ensuring its history and beauty endure for future generations.
